Our  Story

We are passionate about growing and producing products that make a difference to people’s health while caring for our land.

It is important to us that our products are priced fairly for our customers and the farmers producing the ingredients in order to build our local economy and food security in Victoria and Australia.

It’s more to us than growing elderberries ….. it’s also about future proofing our farm, our family and our community.

With Karen working in emergency management planning, responding, relief and recovery to emergencies such as fires, floods, storms, COVID and landslide we are passionate about ensuring we actively work towards anticipating future events and implementing ways to minimise the impacts on our farm and in our community.

Karen and Paul

Our Beginning

Looking to add diversity to our farm we learnt about elderberry and became excited about the wellness benefits. We wanted to further maximise the benefits of our products by utilising fresh elderberry instead of using dried, imported flowers and berries.

To do this we knew we had to grow our own so in 2017 we began growing elderberries and made the decision to learn everything about planting, growing, harvesting, and processing the berries and flowers.

We developed our elderberry grove and a range of products so that people could enjoy all the benefits that nature has to offer. Our friends and family loved our products…..

So elderglen was born.

Future-Proofing from the ground up

Future-proofing isn’t something we talk about in theory — it’s something we live every day. Building Elderglen has meant thinking carefully about how we grow food, manage water, shelter (energy), create income, and stay connected to community through change and uncertainty.

Over time, this way of thinking has shaped not only how we farm, but how we support others — particularly small farms, families, and rural businesses navigating an increasingly unpredictable climate and economy.

Since then

Orchard and Product development – Since establishing Elderglen, we have focused on the deliberate expansion of our orchard, trialling and establishing elderberry cultivars that are genuinely suited to commercial growing in our local climate and conditions. Alongside this, we continue to thoughtfully expand our product range, ensuring it remains grounded in quality, sustainability, and the practical realities of small-scale production.

Industry Leadership and Global collaboration – We are proud to be pioneering the development of a commercial elderberry industry in Australia. This work extends well beyond our own farm and includes actively liaising with, visiting, and collaborating with growers, product developers, scientists, and universities overseas. Through these relationships, we bring knowledge, research, and practical experience back to Australia to support the establishment of a resilient, informed, and viable industry — one that others can participate in and benefit from over time.

In recognition of this work, in 2024 we were invited to speak at the Annual Elderberry Convention in Missouri, USA. In 2025, we were further invited to present at both the New Growers Workshop and the International Elderberry Symposium. These invitations reflect our on-the-ground experience, our contribution to cultivar selection and grower knowledge, and our commitment to sharing lessons learned to support the growth of the industry both globally and within Australia.
